If you start your business as a company, then annual or statutory accounts are a legal requirement. You must both prepare and file your company accounts annually to avoid penalties or being struck off. You may choose to do the accounts yourself when starting, likely because you can save the accounting fees. But from our experience these accounts are not always so correct. This is maybe due to a lack of accounting knowledge and skills. If the first year accounts are incorrect, you will carry forward these incorrect accounts to the following years. So it will be harder to correct them and the fees for correcting these accounts may be higher than the fees you could save in the first place!.

MW Accounting Services has very solid experience in providing reliable accounts services to small limited companies. We can also advise on other accounts-related issues such as tax savings and funds withdrawal.

Self-employed

Unlike limited companies, Companies House does not require a sole trader or a business partnership (not a limited liability partnership) to prepare or file their business accounts. There is no need for them to attach the accounts with their self assessment tax returns to HMRC either. However, it will help those sole traders or partnerships when doing their tax return if they have a profit & loss account prepared. It will make filling in the tax return much easier too.

Limited company

In contrast, a company must prepare and file its annual accounts (called statutory accounts) to Companies House. It can be either paper or online submission. There are late filing penalties for not filing the accounts by the deadline. The penalty depends on how long the accounts take to reach Companies House. Further, it must attach the accounts with its corporation tax return when it is submitted to HMRC. A dormant company still has to submit its annual accounts too even if there are no significant transactions in that year.
